Russell CuttsComment

Being at a railway station means you see a lot of people riding unusual small wheeled bikes that amazingly disappear to the size of a medium suitcase when they step on the train. Its become something of a cultural change in commuting.

We now have the technology to cycle to the station, fold up our bikes and catch a train, unfold them at the end of your journey and ride to wherever you need to be but there are many reasons why people choose a folding bicycle.

It may be you don't have the room for a full size bicycle. It may be you don't like leaving your bicycle unattended. A folding bicycle gives you the ability to vary your routes to accommodate the weather conditions and your mood, arriving at work with a smile on your face. It's all about being able to take your bicycle where you want. There are bikes to suit any budget and any style of riding a folding bicycle gives you the convenience of knowing you are mobile wherever you are.

From pilots to actors to shop workers a folding bike can be taken just about anywhere. Having a folding bicycle gives them the ability to discover more about the places they visit with work getting out and about with your bicycle and enjoying themselves. Yes there are comprises using a folding bicycle but with the right choice of bicycle for you the fun and enjoyment outweigh them.

For the ultra compact we offer the Brompton from our Nottingham Shop. It's a steel bike but it doesn't feel weighty, the 16 inch wheels make the fold incredibly small, if you watch the BBC's W1A comedy you'll understand that this bike is de'rigueur for London commuters.

Bickerton Portables offer a range of classic British styled folding bikes from £450. With 20 inch wheels and an easy fold these are a great bike for those who live in a flat, caravan or even a boat. These are available from our Sheffield and Nottingham Shops.

Bickerton Portables have been around some time now and here is some retro TV adverts showing just how adaptable the bikes are, apologies for the 1980's haircuts.

With folding electric bikes starting to appear the choice can only get better. The Raleigh Stow-e-Way is one such bike, it has a powerful battery that can take you upto 50km and yet it folds away neatly into a compact space-saving size.

If you're not too sure about riding a folding bike then why not try before you buy. We offer a fleet of Brompton bikes available to hire from £6 per day, if you want to try it for longer you can hire for a month for £50. If you buy a bike off us afterwards we'll refund the hire charge.
