Amphifest 2015

Russell CuttsComment

Every year the great people at Friends of Sheaf Valley Park get together and organise an awesome event. We've been having a stall there for the last 2 years and we love it. Amphifest this year looks like it will be an even bigger and better event than the last few years.

There'll be music, dancing, food and even a coconut shy. We'll be there offering help and advice and doing some on the spot repairs.

The fun begins at Noon on Saturday 5th September behind the Railway Station!

SHEFFIELD HALLAM GRAND PRIX -

British Cycling Elite Circuit Series:
Sheffield Hallam Grand Prix

To give you a taster of what you can expect tonight, here are just a few photographs from a previous event.

Top three spectator tips:

  1. Try standing on the apex of a bend (for a short while): you get a real sense of speed.
  2. Lots to see; so, walk around the circuit clockwise: you will always be facing the action.
  3. Taking photos?  Get low and high, but be very careful, don't put yourself or the riders in danger - they will be moving at quite-a-lick.

Fingers crossed the weather will be fine tonight and it will be wheel to wheel action.

CliffHanger 2015 Day 2 -

Advice, ShopRussell CuttsComment

What a great weekend at Cliffhanger 2015.

Being a small independent bike shop we really value your feedback.

If you were one of the many people who spoke to us over the weekend: first, thank you for saying hello and if you have had any subsequent questions, thoughts or ideas, please get in touch (via email, phone or comment below). We really want to hear from you.

We also produced a new brochure for the event, if you didn't pick one up or you were not at Millhouses Park this weekend, we still have a few copies in our shop at the Station or you can download a PDF version here: Love Commuting? You might if you ride.

As you might have read in our last blog post we used Cliffhanger to launch our new Commuter Bike Trial. We think, right now, really is the best time to give cycling to work a go:

This week the schools in Sheffield break-up for their summer holidays; so, generally for the next six weeks the traffic gets lighter - which is great. For your inspiration: The Tour de France is in full swing with live coverage and highlights on ITV4 and on July 22, 2015, Sheffield hosts the 2015 Elite City Center Cycling at the Sheffield Grand Prix.

Not forgetting, our handpicked range of new 2015 Marin and Tern bikes in the shop and a fleet of Hire Bikes all ready for you to try.

We are here to help, support and encourage you to get on your bike. The services we offer:

Get in touch; let us help you get fitter, travel greener and start enjoying your commute.

Love Commuting? You might if you ride.

Well that was an amazing first day at Cliffhanger 2015, Sheffield. Wonderful support for our small independent bike shop from all the people who stopped to say hello. Thank you so much for spending time with us - we really appreciate it.

We've also had some good feedback. Lots of people are keen to try cycling to work this summer and many have shown an interest in our new 5-Day Commuter Trial which we officially launched this weekend:

Hire a commuter bike from us for 5 days for only £45 - if you love the experience (and we are pretty sure you will) If you then buy a new bike from us, we will give you your hire fee back.

Also, pick up one of our flyers from the CliffHanger Festival; we'll be pleased to offer you a special 10%  discount of any new bike in our shop.
(valid for next 28 days).

Marin Lombard

Tern Link D8

The two most popular bikes at the show have been the Marin Lombard and Tern Link D8 folding bike.

Both these bikes have been attracting the crowds and they have both been taken on several test rides around Millhouses Park.

Tickets: £6.00

The whole team will be here this weekend; our theme "Love commuting? by bike you will. Ride".

We want to encourage the good people of Sheffield to try commuting by bicycle this summer.

We are bring along a few of our excellent hire bikes for you to try and taster of some of the amazing Marin and Tern bikes you can buy from our little shop, at Sheffield Railway Station.

There really hasn't been a better time to start commuting into the city center and it's so easy from the west-side of  town. The route down Abbeydale / London road is great.

So, if you live in or around Millhouses, Totley, Woodseats, or even Dore* pop down and say hello. We will be happy talk about bikes, urban riding, getting fit and the fun you can have along the way. Love commuting? by bike you will.

We will also be providing bike parking for the festival.

Hope to see you soon.

* or any other part of the city :-)

Looking good in Sheffield

ShopRussell Cutts2 Comments

When you start selling bikes, often the manufacturers supply you with some photographs to use on your website and in brochures etc.

Whilst the ones we have got are really good photographs (very dynamic and full of life) and in fact some are OK for our needs. We wanted some photos of our own that were less generic, unique to us; something that gives our website a real sense of place and character.

So, we've been exploring Sheffield to find some picturesque locations. There is a great mix of backdrops within minutes of the railway station (where our shop is). So, with the help of our designer/photographer friend 'Polymathic' we decided to take some of our own Sheffield bike photographs.

We took out our new Tern folding bikes. These bikes a built for commuting in and around places like Sheffield. Unlike some other foldies, Tern's have a good range of gears and even a 24 inch wheeled version - perfect for hills .

So, here are just a few photos from the day. Now we have them, look out for some changes to our website within the next few weeks. Ps. have you see our Russell's Bike Shop taster page yet?

Love commuting? You might by bike.

The Plixi (the folding bike HELMET)

It only arrived in the shop today and we sold the first one within minutes. It's causing quite a buzz with everyone who see it.

Overade designed Plixi to help make life a lot easier. Thanks to its unique and patented folding mechanism, it can easily be tucked into a bag, while still providing a maximum level of safety and comfort.

Sleek, innovative and smart, it's a must-have for commuters.

Keeping your bike going in winter

Russell CuttsComment

It really has turned to winter out there, a typical British winter and we all know how hard it is or us cyclists when this weather really kicks in. Its not just the cold or the snow or even the wind (although this can be worse than the first two put together) its the damage all of it can do to you and your bicycle.

The cold can really affect cyclists particularly extremities so make sure you have some good quality waterproof gloves, keep your neck warm with a scarf and wear a hat if your not wearing a helmet. For longer journeys layering your clothes will really help keep out the cold, use a good base layer and then overlay with a t'shirt or jersey and then use a windproof jacket to top it off. Keeping the legs warm can be more difficult but they are doing most of the work so tend not to get cold until you stop, a pair of running leggings or some long johns under your trousers will add a little more protection.

Ride to work: part 3

Russell Cutts1 Comment

So now you have the equipment, you have the route mapped out and so now you have to ride it.

As with anything new like this you should do a recce first, ride the route on a day off and find all the quirks and difficult points it will also give you a real understanding of how long it will take you, the gradients in Sheffield may slow you down. If you do this on a weekend be aware that the traffic will be heavier at rush hour in the week...
